How can I get the cedar smell back in my closets?

July 7th, 2010
baximo asked:

I have 50 year old cedar wood closets. Trouble is, they don’t have the cedar smell anymore and I would like to get it back somehow. I heard of a solution that you apply to the wood directly that creates that smell, has anybody else heard of this or have any other ideas?

Closet Solutions for the New Year

June 29th, 2010
Ron Maier asked:

Now that the New Year has begun, you may be looking for ways to reorganize your home. If your closets are in disarray, then you may need a few pointers to get you to the point of organization that you wish to be. Our dream is to open our closet doors and see all of the clothes perfectly spaced and organized. Everything is in its place and is where we can easily get to it. Things that we always use are easily accessible and storage items are packed neatly away and out of the way. Well, this isn’t usually the case for most of us. If you open your closet door and see a wall of disorder, then you have some work to do.

The first step is to pull everything out. Yes, everything means everything! If you don’t have the floor space to work in, then use your bed as your work area. Pull everything out and put it on the bed. Clean the shelves, light fixtures, drawers if you have them, and even the hanging rods. Get rid of all the dust that can build up in this ignored area and start fresh. Use closet fresheners to make it smell good too. Some things to consider are floral potpourri sachets, cedar wood blocks, balls or chips, and baking soda to absorb odors. These can be especially useful in areas where you will keep your shoes. No one wants their clean clothes to smell like stinky feet.

The next step is to start with the big storage items. Quilts and comforters that aren’t being used can be stored on a top shelf, since you don’t need to get to them very often. Use bags that can be compressed to keep them clean and dust free. If you put a dryer sheet in the bag with the blankets, then they’ll come out smelling great when you’re ready to use them. If you don’t like bags, then consider plastic containers that stack easily. They look nice and neat, but also serve the purpose of keeping things fresh and clean. If you have a very large closet, then you might consider building or purchasing a large drawer system to store your linens and blankets.

Next, you need to get rid of any old clothes and shoes that you no longer need or use. If you find yourself constantly bypassing certain shoes because they hurt or they are scuffed up, then go ahead and donate them to charity. Make a box of shoes, belts, and handbags that you can easily give away. Then go through the clothing and put things that just don’t fit, are out of style, or you just never wear into another box or garbage bags. This is also a great time to throw out all of those mismatched hangers that are making your closet look trashy. Get yourself some high-quality clothes hangers, such as wooden hangers, to keep your clothing perfectly separated on the bar. You’ll appreciate the uniformity every time you open your closet door. Everything will hang nicer with a little space between each garment, leaving you with less digging and less ironing to do.

Get your closets organized and start your New Year off on the right foot!

Five Design Traits Found In The Ideal Closet

June 28th, 2010
Christine OKelly asked:

Virtually everyone who is designing his or her own storage system wants to create the perfect closet. The only problem is that many are unsure of what goes into making the perfect space. Five main factors go into the perfect storage area, and if a system fulfills these five things, it will make them easier to use and more efficient.

Bring It Out Into The Open

To work at their best, the items you use most often should be visible. For shelves, consider using things such as bins and drawer fronts made from wire or glass so you can see into them. It is easier to locate what you are looking for and easier to keep clean because there is less digging. Dividers are also helpful. Secondly, be sure to add the right lighting to your closet. Use fluorescent lighting with a compact fixture rather than windows that take up storage space and don’t add light at night or early in the morning.

Smart Space Systems

Use the full height and width of the space by adapting your design accordingly. The highest shelves can store items used rarely or seasonably. Utilize containers or bins that can pull out for access to deep corners or along the floor, and use several rods at different heights. Use adjustable shelving and compartments of the right size so you can store everything efficiently by eliminating empty space. This might mean removing seasonal clothing items and storing them under the bed in containers to ensure you have enough space. Be sure your design will allow you to change the look of your closet so it will work efficiently into the future.

Prevent Unwanted Visitors

Mold, bacteria, and mildew grow in a space that is closed a majority of the time. This can continue to grow, ruining clothing and harming the health of you and your loved ones. Be sure to install a dehumidifier or small fan to create airflow in closed in closet systems.

Wise Material Choice

The material of the closet organizational system needs to look as good as it is durable, but it also needs to work well for you while being affordable. Cedar, for instance, is a poor choice for this purpose because it keeps out moths, but it makes your room and clothing smell. Oak, hickory, and maple don’t have the strong natural scent and are durable, but they can become expensive when using them for complete systems. A more economical choice is to select plywood or MDF for the areas you don’t normally see. For flooring, consider using a laminate, linoleum, tile, or hardwood with a small area rug that will clean easily instead of carpeting.

Benefit From Habits

Consider which items you use the most and design the system so these things are stored in the area between your waist and eyebrows where they are easy to get at and see. Consider how you like to store your clothes. If you hang t-shirts rather than fold them, add the needed space with an additional rod. If you like to fold pants rather than hang them, ensure there is a shelf to store them.

For a perfect closet in Las Vegas condominiums or a large Florida mansion, the secret is selecting a design that fits you perfectly. With the right design, your storage space will hold more than ever before and will be easy to use, giving your day an easier start.

How do I get the cigarette smoke out of the clothes in my closet?

June 17th, 2010
holla–bolla asked:

Well, both of my parents are smokers, and i guess i’m sick and tired of people telling me I smell of smoke, not to mention I hate knowing I smell like smoke all the time. So, I’m trying to make some changes. So far i’m thinking of putting all my clothes, jeans and all in my closet, and spraying them all down with febreeze, and putting bbq charcoal in my closet (cause i heard it works to get rid of the odor) and putting a door on my closet and hopefully that will work. Any other ideas or remedies that you know of could really help me out. Thank you.
