What were these tick-like bugs that used to hang out in our closets?

In our old place (thankfully, we’ve moved, but we’re still very curious) we’d find small tick-like bugs in closets, in laundry baskets, and other areas like that. They were not ticks, the were not bed bugs - they never bit us. They didn’t seem to feed off anything! They were way too big to be dust mites… they looked SIMILAR to ticks, but they definitely were not… They had redish/brownish bulbous bodies, they’d “crunch” and “pop” if you squished them.
Any idea what these things were?!?!? THANKS!

They were NOT cockroaches.
They were slow moving. They had no idea when people were around. They wouldn’t like “run off” or anything.
Again, they looked like ticks. But they didn’t bite anyone or live off either the humans OR the cats that lived in the apartment.
